  “Nice of you to join us.” Dungeon Master Spencer Cook greeted Jaxson with a scowl from the head of the conference table in the luxurious office of Runway.

  “Screw you. I just flew in.”

  “You landed almost two hours ago.”

  “Nice of you to worry about me.”

  “I’m more worried about getting out of here on time.” Spencer glanced sideways at the beautiful woman sitting next to him at the long table. Jaxson rarely saw the dungeon master’s submissive with her hair down. The sexy dress. The high heels. It was like a whole new Klara.

  “Why? You have a hot date?”

  Spencer shook his head, but Jax knew he was lying. Something had the DM shook up.

  “Let’s just get on with this. I don’t know why this meeting couldn’t have waited until after the New Year anyway. I told you everything is on track for the New Year’s Eve party.”

  Jaxson sat at the end of the long table with Chase and Emma on either side of him, setting up the only five people in the room at opposite ends of the conference table.

He worried he might have pushed Emma a bit too hard. She looked pale, and for the first time he noticed a line of perspiration gathered at her hairline.

  He leaned closer to her to whisper, “Are you okay, baby? If you aren’t feeling well, why don’t you go up and lay down? Chase and I can handle this meeting without you.”

  She shook her head. Her still-damp brunette hair waved across her shoulders. “No way. I’ve worked up the financials for this meeting. I’ll stay.”

  He didn’t argue with her, but he glanced to Chase who was watching their girl carefully. It made Jax feel better knowing Chase would be keeping an eye on their sub as well.

  Jaxson got back to the dungeon master’s last statement. “I’m not worried about New Year’s Eve. I know we’re ready for that event. It’s Valentine’s Day I want to run through.”

  His friend tried to derail the discussion with his own questions. “Why don’t we start with you telling us how things went out in California? I think that’s more important, don’t you?”

  Jaxson didn’t miss the accusatory edge to Spencer’s voice. He needed to nip that shit in the bud right now.

  “Like I’ve told you multiple times, you don’t need to worry about it. You just focus on D.C.”

  “How the hell can you say that? You’re about to expand from two to four clubs overnight. I’m pretty sure that’s going to impact me.”

  Jax took a deep breath to stop himself from losing his temper with the bossy dungeon master. “First, I haven’t committed to anything yet. Second, if, and that is a big if… if we open clubs on the West Coast, you will have no responsibility there whatsoever.”

  “No, but don’t you think it might take you, Chase, and Emma out of town more often?”

  “Are you telling me you can’t handle things here in D.C. without us?”

  Spencer’s agitation was growing. “Hell no. It’s just…” The dungeon master’s voice trailed off in an uncharacteristic silence.

  “Just what?” Jax snapped.

  “Nothing.”

  “Speak. Now.”

  “Fine. It’s just that we’re only now coming out in the black financially after a year of being open. Don’t you think it’s a little early to go jumping back into debt again, especially in the Southern California real estate market?”

  “Wow, I’m impressed. I didn’t think you cared about such pesky things as making money.” Jaxson joked, only half kidding. Spencer had never shown much of an interest in the more mundane parts of running the business.

  Like making a profit.

  Spencer glanced uncomfortably at the woman sitting to his right before looking back at Jaxson. “I still say it’s not the most important part of my job, but I get it. We need to make money.”

  Jaxson smiled warmly at Klara. “Congratulations, Ms. Ericksson. You seem to have worked wonders on our dungeon master. You have him paying attention to profit margins. What’s next? Quality control measures?”

  “Fuck you,” Spencer groused.

  Jaxson didn’t miss the proud grin on Klara’s face, yet she wisely remained silent. “No thanks. Chase and Emma already took care of that in the limo from the airport.”
